The Wilton Y Wahoo Swim Team is sending 24 athletes to compete at the annual YMCA National Short Course Swimming Championships to be held at the new Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, NC from April 2-5.
The meet is being hosted this year for the first time in Greensboro after many years in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The new Aquatic Center is a larger facility which offers 22 short course lanes and a seating capacity of 2500. There will be 220 YMCA swim teams with about 1500 athletes competing at the 2012 championship meet and about 2000 people in total are expected to attend the 4-day competition. Anyone wishing to follow the results can log on to www.ymcaswimminganddiving.orgfor daily reports.
Swimmers from the Wahoos have qualified for this prestigious competition every year for over 25 years and have won 25 national mens/womens/team titles during that time. The team was formed when the Y first opened its building in 1972 which included the original 25 yd. pool. Both the Wahoos and the Y are celebrating their 40thanniversary this year. The Wahoos are currently CT State YMCA champions.
In addition to the swimming events, other highlights of the National Championships in Greensboro include announcement of YMCA Coach of the Year and the male and female swimmers who have been selected for the Y USA/Nike Swim Outstanding Scholar Athlete Award, which is $1000 toward college tuition.
